City of Gainesville issued the following announcement on July 30.
As we approach the weekend, Please be aware, the weather forecast is calling for high temperatures and high humidity levels resulting in an above normal heat index for north central Florida, reaching between 108-112 degrees for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 30-Aug. 1).
Drink plenty of water
Wear loose fitting clothing
Check on pets and the elderly and those without air conditioning
Be mindful of work/rest cycles, as well and spend time in shade or air conditioning and seek medical help if experiencing symptoms of heat stress/exhaustion
Symptoms of heat exhaustion:
Faint or dizzy
Excessive sweating
Cool, pale, clammy skin
Nausea or vomiting
Rapid, weak pulse
Muscle cramps
To treat heat exhaustion:
Get to a cooler, air conditioned place
Drink water (if fully conscious)
Take a cool shower or use a cold compress
Symptoms of heat stroke:
Throbbing headache, confusion
No sweating
Body temperature is above 103 degrees F
Red, hot, dry skin
Nausea or vomiting
Rapid, strong pulse
May lose consciousness
To treat a heat stroke:
Call 911
Move the person to a cooler place
Cool using cool cloths or bath
Do not give anything to drink
