UF College of Nursing issued the following announcement on Sept. 3
Associate Professor Leslie Parker, PhD, APRN, NNP-BC, FAAN, was part of a research team found that breast milk from COVID-19 vaccinated mothers contained COVID-19 antibodies, which may be able to protect nursing babies.
The study was part of a collaborative effort between the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, Department of Pediatrics, Department of Microbiology and Cell Science and the Medical University of South Carolina.
“Results of our study indicate that when breastfeeding mothers are vaccinated for COVID-19, antibodies against COVID-19 are passed into their breast milk and thus to their infant when they breastfeed,” Parker said. “While these antibodies may protect their infant from COVID-19, more research is needed to fully answer this question.”
