University of Florida athletics issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
Shelton overtook two ranked players and Andy Andrade posted a singles win in the main consolation draw.
Sophomore Ben Shelton moved on in the main draw after notching a win over the No. 3 and No. 29 players in the country, while senior Andy Andrade added another win for the Gators in the main singles consolation draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
Shelton put together two solid wins to advance to the Round of 16 in the singles main draw after defeating two ranked players in the top-30 of ITA's preseason rankings.
It started in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, Oct. 6, when Shelton was set to face No. 29-ranked Martim Prata of Tennessee. The Gator overpowered his opponent in two sets to win 6-4, 6-2.
In the following round, Shelton had a tall task ahead of him as he faced No. 3-ranked and 1-seeded Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina, who finished runner-up of the NCAA Singles Championships last season against teammate Sam Riffice.
Shelton shot out to an early lead as he won the first set 6-3. Shelton was ahead two games to none in set two and would advance to the Round of 16 when Rodrigues retired due to injury.
No. 14 Andy Andrade competed in the main singles consolation against Utah's No. 98 Franco Capalbo on Thursday and pulled out his first win of the tournament. Andrade claimed the first set 6-2, the secured the victory with a battle in the second set, 7-5.
