ALACHUA COUNTY LIBRARY DISTRICT: Great Stories Club - "On the Come Up" by Angie Thomas

Boooks

Alachua County Library District issued the following announcement.

Welcome to the Great Stories Club held at the Alachua County Detention Center!  The Great Stories Club is a reading and discussion program that gives underserved youth the opportunity to read, reflect, and share ideas on topics that resonate with them.  Since 2006 the Great Stories Club has reached more than 700 libraries and 30,000 young adults.  This book club has been held at the Alachua County Detention Center since 2018 and young adults that are incarcerated are encouraged to participate.  The teens at the Detention Center have enjoyed these books so much we encourage all young adults in our area to participate in this program by reading along with us.

This month we are reading On the Come Up by Angie Thomas.  Angie Thomas also wrote The Hate U Give, a novel that we considered last year.  While both novels take place in Garden Heights, the stories are not the same.  In On the Come Up we meet Brianna, a sixteen-year-old high school student who wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time.  Bri faces numerous challenges at home and at school.  One painful event at school fuels her passion so much that she channels her frustration into powerful lyrics.  Her rap goes viral, but not for all of the right reasons.  How does Bri handle the pressure?  Does she become a successful rapper?  Will her rap battle wins lead to a win in her life?  Please enjoy this inspiring story!

If you enjoy On the Come Up, you might enjoy the books below as well.Feel free to place any of these items on hold or check them out on OverDrive or Libby.
