City of Gainesville issued the following announcement on Oct. 7.
The City of Gainesville will celebrate the culture, traditions and history of the first inhabitants of the land during a ceremony where a new historical marker at City Hall will be unveiled.
The event includes music and prayer by members of the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole and Sioux nations, as well as a proclamation read by Mayor Lauren Poe, recognizing the Potano people, part of the Timucua Nation, who once inhabited north central Florida.
When: Monday, Oct. 11 from 6-6:30 p.m.
Where: City Hall Plaza, 200 E. University Avenue
To help ensure public health and safety, neighbors are asked to practice social distancing at the event.
