City of Gainesville issued the following announcement on Nov. 16.
With more than 35 years of experience as a strategic communicator and leader, Cynthia W. Curry officially joins the City of Gainesville as its interim city manager. As one of six charter officers appointed by the city commission, she will serve as the administrative head of city government with powers and duties as defined in the city’s charter.
“I am highly motivated and looking forward to fulfilling my role as a community builder,” Curry said.
Curry most recently served as the diversity officer of The Everglades Foundation. In this role, she worked closely with the organization’s leaders to forge community relationships and collaborative partnerships in service of its diversity and inclusion goals. She worked to raise awareness through community engagement and education with a focus on America’s Everglades, its ecosystems, and the importance of the restoration and protection of the greater Everglades ecosystem.
“Cynthia’s lifetime of leadership experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors have uniquely prepared her to lead our city during this period of transition,” said Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe.
Curry’s executive experience includes positions at Florida Memorial University; Florida International University; and Miami-Dade County, and as the vice chairperson of the Governor’s Emergency Financial Oversight Board to the City of Miami. As the president and CEO of her own company, CWC & Associates, she worked with county, municipal, private and academic sector entities to advance strategic priorities, including serving as acting city manager for the City of Miami Gardens.
“I look forward to working with her to strengthen our organization and continue to serve our neighbors,” Poe said.
Curry’s numerous professional awards include the Marks of Excellence Public Service Award from the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, its highest honor recognizing distinguished public service. She is a founding member of the NFBPA South Florida Chapter and a two-term national president. She is a graduate of the University of Miami where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in politics and public affairs.
