The City of Gainesville, the Indigenous Peoples’ Task Force and community partners invite all neighbors to upcoming events celebrating the vibrant culture, traditions and history of the first inhabitants of the land.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day ceremony
When: 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10
Where: City Hall Plaza, 200 E. University Avenue
Mayor Lauren Poe will proclaim Monday as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Gainesville during a brief ceremony recognizing the contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples including the Potano, part of the Timucua Nation, who once inhabited North Central Florida. The reading of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation will be followed by musical performances.
The events are free and open to the public, and support the City’s vision of equity, inclusion and access to diverse cultural and arts locations, facilities and programs of interest to all neighbors.
If you are also interested in experiencing art and culture across Latin and Indigenous America, the Harn Museum of Art (3259 Hull Road) will be hosting a Museum Night from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
